Who am I as a Writer?

Thoughtful was the adjective I used to describe myself as a writer on the first day of class. While thoughtfulness is an important quality for any scribe, there are many other characteristics of a good writer, such as persistence, creativity, and originality. As a writer, I strive to exude all of the aforementioned attributes.

Thoughtful

This guy knows what's up.

Writing in a thoughtful manner does not require one to sit and ponder for hours like the ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle. A thoughtful writer simply plans out his work before he scribbles with his pen or pounds on his keyboard. This is done in order to avoid rambling from topic to topic or hitting a wall midway through a piece of writing. I try my best to design and mold my thoughts before I begin writing.

Persistent

Even the most thoughtful writers occasionally get writer's block. Instead of quitting, persistent writers find a way to move forward. My method for overcoming writer's block is to take a break. Usually, I can clear my mind by participating in an enjoyable activity, such as riding a bike. It's important to take a rest and lower one's frustration level when faced with writer's block.

 

Of course, time might not be available to a writer if a deadline is approaching, which is why I always recommend allowing enough time to complete the writing process.

 

Creative

Readers never want to be bored. A creative writer will use descriptive language and vary their sentence structure to keep the attention of their readers. Dull, repetitive writing becomes old quickly, even when the subject of the writing is interesting. Don't ruin a good story with bland language.

 

No matter if I'm writing a research paper or a short story, I always try to mix creative elements into my work. Similies and metaphors pop into my mind when I think of creative writing, but simply interchanging short sentences and long sentences is also a way to add spice to a piece of writing.

 

Original

Artists like Picasso aren't the only ones who get to be original.

Originality, perhaps more than any other trait, is vital for a writer. Plagiarism is theft in the world of writers. An original writer expresses their unique ideas and opinions in their work. They do not simply paraphase the work of a fellow writer without adding a new perspective.

 

It's not easy to be original, especially in the digital age. Many fall victim to plagiarism and steal ideas in order to lessen their workload. I try look at the background facts and form my own thoughts on the subject before reading the anaylsis of other writers. Obviously, one needs to remain open to fresh ideas, but a writer should not adopt those ideas as their own or use them in their work without the proper citations.
